Congratulations to the 2014 HAPA Scholarships recipients!

HAPA High School Scholarship Winners:

jamie hearn photoJamie Hearn – The recipient of a unique scholarship this year, donated in memory of an intelligent, academically-driven woman, by the family of Nona Sarah McBean, Jamie attended Aiea High School and will attend the University of California Irvine to study Environmental Science in the fall of 2014.  Jamie was the President of her school’s Science Club, Vice President of the Pacific and Asian Affairs Council and Environmental Club, and the treasurer of Aiea’s National Honor Society. Jamie has been in student government for 4 years and including serving as Senior Class President. She enjoys reading, hiking, and playing soccer.

Casey Morrissey – 

Ka ram Yang photoKa ram Yang – Ka ram will graduate in May as a Valedictorian of Leilehua High School’s Class of 2014. She is bilingual, fluent in both Korean and English, and is currently learning Spanish. Throughout high school, Ka ram participated in Varsity Air Rifle, Archery Club, Band, Eco Club, Leo Club, and Varsity Tennis. She was manager for both the Air Rifle team (2012) and Tennis team (2014) and has participated in the Scholastic Art and Writing Competition and won a Gold Key in Photography. In her spare time, Ka ram enjoys baking, listening to music, and reading books or online blogs.

Lorelei Zabanal – Lorelei will graduate from Maryknoll School in June and plans to study economics at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. She has served as the president of Maryknoll’s Junior Statesmen of America chapter, the Head of Business of their Robotics Team, and as a Student Ambassador. She teaches Sunday School to seventh graders at St. Jude Church and mentors fifth graders. She is very grateful to HAPA for helping her fulfill her dreams of going to college, and is very excited for the next chapter of her life!

 

HAPA Collegiate Scholarship Winners:

veronica glen photoVeronica Glen – Veronica was born and raised in Aiea and graduated from Punahou School in 2009. She attended Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, where she joined Pi Beta Phi Fraternity for Women in January 2010 and received her Bachelor’s degree in Health and Human Science in May 2013. Veronica is currently a first year Doctor of Physical Therapy student and Class President at Columbia University in New York City. Veronica enjoys running, golfing, canoe paddling, and reading Game of Thrones. She is very thankful for HAPA for allowing her to represent the Honolulu Panhellenic community through her graduate studies.

She graduated as student body president from Seabury Hall and is currently attending Chapman University in Orange, California, where she majors in Strategic and Corporate Communication with a double minor in Graphic Design and Advertising. Ashley is a member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority, and will complete her undergraduate degree in 2016. 

 

Jacque Law Scholarship Winner:

Cara Bertelmann photoCara Bertelmann – Cara graduated from Kamehameha Schools on the Big Island of Hawaii in 2011, and is currently a senior at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in fall 2014 with a major in Advertising and Public Relations, and two minors, history and sociology. This summer Cara will volunteer abroad in China at an orphanage and intern at the Ronald McDonald House Charities in Honolulu. Cara’s is a member of Alpha Delta Pi-Alpha Epsilon chapter where she served as Public Relations chair in 2013, and is currently on the Centennial Committee, planning the chapter’s 100th anniversary in April 2015. Cara is assisting her chapter’s historian in creating a book about Alpha Epsilon’s history for their 2015 Centennial. Cara is also on the public relations committee for Alpha Delta Pi, which requires promoting the sorority on campus, as well as their philanthropy, the Ronald McDonald House Charities. After graduation, Cara plans to find a public relations position for a non-profit organization or possibly go to graduate school.

 

Leah Rowland Scholarship Winner:

Kana Leia Veney photoKana Leia Veney – Kana Leia is a sophomore at the University of Hawaii at Manoa studying Management Information Systems and International Business. She is currently in the Honors program and was one of the first twenty-nine freshmen accepted into Shidler College of Business. Kana Leia initiated into Alpha Gamma Delta – Delta Sigma chapter in Fall 2012 and was their chapter’s Publications Coordinator for Spring 2013 and Fall 2013. Kana Leia is now the Vice President of Scholarship for Delta Sigma and has achieved Strive for Pi (3.14+ GPA), the Red Rose Award (3.5+ GPA), and has been on Dean’s List three semesters in a row. In addition to being an active member of AGD and a full-time student, she is working part-time for TD Ameritrade as a Strategic Sourcing Intern. Kana Leia will return home to Lincoln, Nebraska over summer break to work full time at TD Ameritrade and be an interim dance coach for her high school’s dance team. Kana Leia is incredibly grateful for HAPA’s generosity in awarding her the Leah Rowland scholarship and for all that HAPA and Alpha Gamma Delta, have given her. Kana Leia continuously strives to live her life with the purpose that has been instilled in her as an Alpha Gam.
